Named Jury Chair, New York Global Short Film Festival 2026 (Season One)
For nearly four decades, Lear Levin has built an extensive and distinguished career as a film director and director of photography. His credits span feature-length documentaries, short films, television specials, and thousands of commercials—including major campaigns for brands such as Prince Spaghetti and United Airlines.
His television work on the lifestyle programs of Barbara Smith and Martha Stewart earned multiple Emmy Awards, further establishing his reputation in the industry. Levin’s work is also preserved in the permanent collections of prestigious institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, the George Eastman Library, as well as numerous universities across the United States and internationally.
Beyond filmmaking, Levin has also maintained a lifelong dedication to photography. While working as a cinematographer, he consistently carried a still camera, allowing him to capture moments beyond motion pictures. His photographic subjects include ballet dancers, rodeo cowboys, prizefighters, exotic landscapes, flora, and fauna—each reflecting his diverse artistic curiosity.
Levin has also spent years mastering rare, hand-crafted photographic printing techniques, including Platinum/Palladium printing, Three-Color Gum processes, and hybrid methods combining both. These archival techniques are known for their durability and distinctive painterly texture. His Giclée prints are produced with equal precision, using fine watercolor papers and museum-grade archival inks.
His 1971 video footage later played a significant historical role in Bangladesh’s liberation war cinema. Based on his archival recordings, acclaimed Bangladeshi filmmakers Tareque Masud and Catherine Masud created the celebrated documentary Muktir Gaan (The Song of Freedom), which received widespread international acclaim and strong audience response.
Now bringing his decades of artistic and technical expertise to the film community, Lear Levin will serve as the Chairman of the Jury Board for the New York Global Short Film Fest 2026 (Season One). His appointment adds significant artistic weight and international credibility to the festival’s inaugural edition.
